Description

C17th walnut carved walnut caned elbow chair or armchair, this journeyman’s chair has good carvings to top side and bottom rails, the cane work old but probably replaced, the arms have carved details to the tops and base of the scroll, the rails are hand carved barley twist columns. The seat rails having the cross hatched scratch carving.

Condition
This chair has had a hard life, from the top, there are areas of old worm throughout, ( treated and no spongy areas at all) the rails surrounding the back caning have been strengthened by additional supports, the seat rails have all been strengthened from the underside, and the feet are replacements, the chair has lost a fair bit of its original dark finish. On a positive note the repairs are honest and this is a 300 year old chair and although it has a little movement in the back rails is still a very serviceable chair
